The three fairytale castles of Linderhof, Hohenschwangau and Neuschwanstein are all within a 45km radius of Seefeld. The first is the only castle that the Bavarian King Ludwig II ever finished. He spent his youth in Hohenschwangau and made his dreams into reality with Neuschwanstein.
All of the castles are notable for their extensive decoration: giant mirrors, gold everywhere, paintings, silk and velvet, glittering crystals and expensive porcelain. Especially sensational are the Moorish Kiosk with peacock throne and the Venus grotto with Waterfall at Linderhof.
Neuschwanstein is a hommage to the composer Richard Wagner. The massive singers' hall has frescos with scenes from the saga of Parsifal. The 15m high throneroom stretches over two floors decorated in blue and gold and is based on the design of a Byzantine basilica. If only because of its position, Neuschwanstein is one of the most photographed castles in the world.
