The source of the Isar in Scharnitz

The Isar, the main river of Bavaria, rises in the middle of the Karwendel near Scharnitz. Discover the source of this river.

The upper Isar is a much-loved stretch of water for rafting and canoeing. Aficionados treasure the quality of the water and the stunning landscape in the middle of the protected area of the Karwendel Alpine Park.

A walk to the source of the Isar is a fabulous experience, especially for Familys. The trails are not difficult, are varied and not too long - exactly how children like it.

Start your walk at the Karwendel parking area near the Scharnitz parish church. From there simply follow the route along the bank of the Isar. After around two hours you will reach the source of the Isar with a lovely spot for a rest. Our tip: Build a little boat with your children out of bark and then watch its journey downstream.
