Silvermines in Schwaz
In Schwaz, only 50 km away from Seefeld, the largest silver mine in the Middle Ages now opens its doors to all generations for a view of the mining in this impressive area.
In the Middle Ages Schwaz was one of the most important trading towns in Europe. It was rich because of the nearby deposits of silver and the traces of the miners of those days can still be visited for a unique trip back in time.
The mine railway takes you 800m down where you can feel the kind of conditions that miners experienced as they dug out the silver and copper. The guided tour around the silver mines lasts about 90 minutes.
